Renfrew – Three local businesses will be the main sponsors of this year’s Annual Hike for Hospice which takes place on Sunday, May 1.
Akienhead’s Pharma Choice, Renfrew, and Canadian Tire, Pembroke, and Canadian Tire, Renfrew, are the major sponsors.
“We are very grateful to Sheila Kemp of Aikenhead’s Pharma Choice, Ray and Barb Pilon of Pembroke Canadian Tire, and Bill and Bobbie Sears of Renfrew Canadian Tire for becoming our three main sponsors for the 2022 Hike,” Hospice Executive Director Marjorie Joly said. “Their support for this major fundraiser for Hospice is very much appreciated.”
For the last two years, the hike has been held virtually because of COVID-19 restrictions, but now with the relaxing of regulations, the live event is returning with a few changes.
This year’s hike will happen at Hospice Renfrew where there is plenty of parking, and plenty of wide-open space in the parking lots and grounds around Hospice. Participants will leave Hospice and hike a route around Renfrew, returning to Hospice where there will be a large outdoor reception with refreshments and draws.
Registration starts at 12:30 noon with the Hike begins at 2 p.m. There is also a 5k route for runners.
Hospice Renfrew Board Chair Gerald Tracey said Renfrew’s Hike for Hospice has always led all other hikes across the country in monies raised and he is hoping this year’s Hike will be another leader across the country.
“With your support we will continue to host the most successful annual Hike in Canada, but more importantly, funds raised will ensure those individuals coming into our facility will continue to receive the wonderful care Hospice Renfrew is known for providing,” Mr. Tracey said.
He said the return to larger gatherings after a two-year absence is something many people are looking forward to.
“It will be a great day for many people to reconnect after a long absence,” Mr. Tracey said. “The Hospice family is made of several hundred people. We are a close knit group brought together by this wonderful facility.”
Each year a family is chosen to lead off the Hikers in memory of their loved one. This year the family of Sylvester Alfelski from Cobden will be the lead hiker’s. Sylvester’s Polish Pacers will lead the many family teams that will participate in memory of a loved one.
The Hike will happen, rain or shine.
“We look forward to welcoming back past participants and greeting new ones,” Ms. Joly said.
Teams choose a name for the Hike and many of them select a theme and accordingly.
“Many of the outfits are quite unique and colourful and some teams go all out,” Ms. Joly said. “It will be happy day in Renfrew as participants walk through town for a cause close to their hearts.”
