Renfrew – Canadian Tire stores in Pembroke and Renfrew have teamed up to become the main sponsor for this year’s annual Hike for Hospice which takes place virtually on Sunday, May 2.

“We are very thankful to Ray and Barb Pilon at Pembroke Canadian Tire and Bill and Bobbie Sears at Renfrew Canadian Tire for becoming our main sponsors for the 2021 hike,” Hospice board chair Gerald Tracey said. “Their support of this major fundraiser for Hospice is very much appreciated.”

This is the second year the annual hike will be held virtually due to COVID -19 which has brought immense change to everyone’s life.

“However, the one thing that remains constant is the important need for Hospice Renfrew to continue its fundraising efforts so we can continue to provide comfort, care and compassion to individuals who require the services provided by a dedicated and committed staff,” Mr. Tracey said.

Fortunately, Renfrew County has so far come through the pandemic without serious outbreaks and a minimal number of infections compared to larger centres. However, like many charities and services, Hospice Renfrew has felt the harsh effects of COVID – 19.

“Since March, we have seen our donor contributions decline and our corporate events cancelled,” he added. “But we are anticipating a lot of support for our largest annual fundraising event – Hike for

Hospice.

Marjorie Joly, Executive Director said while it is still not possible to stage events involving large numbers of people, she is excited about the second Annual Virtual Hike.

“We are very thankful to both the Pembroke and Renfrew Canadian Tire stores who have chosen to sponsor our virtual event this year,” she said. “We are also pleased to have Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsors who have chosen to support us this year.”

Ms. Joly is encouraging former hike participants and new teams to join Hospice for this year’s hike or to sponsor the Hike with a financial contribution.

“We are pleased to have sponsors that have chosen to help us this year, but Hospice Renfrew still needs your help,” she said. “This event has been a leader in hosting the most successful hike in terms of monies raised, across Canada. With your support, we hope to sustain this momentum.”

Mr. Tracey added the new world of “virtual” services has become a safe, secure and a practical way of ensuring Hospice can move forward.

“Your financial support for Hospice Renfrew through this virtual platform will allow us to continue the care, comfort and compassion for residents and their families through their palliative journey,” he said. The Virtual Hike means participants can hike anywhere in Renfrew County (or literally anywhere in the world.)

Ms. Joly encourages Hospice supporters to lace up their running shoes, walk the local trails, stroll in their neighbourhood with their pets or simply stay home and use the treadmill.

“You can choose the flexibility and convenience of your hiking on Sunday, May 2, at your own pace and distance,” she said.
