Hospice
Defined
Residential hospices are for
terminally ill people who can no longer be cared for in their
own homes, yet do not require the expensive and highly technical
care of an acute care hospital. Residential hospice serves
patients with a life expectancy of 3 months or less.
Hospice recognizes that death is part of
living and that families and patients need care, comfort
and compassion with expert support for pain control and symptom
management in their final months and weeks together.
The daily routine and pace of life at hospice
is determined by the patient. Family involvement is encouraged,
patients take their meals when they want and every effort
is made to provide peace and comfort.
Volunteers are an important part of hospice,
enhancing the attention patients and their families receive,
offering emotional and practical support for families in their
final weeks and months together.
24-hour nursing care, with physician support, at no cost to the patient.
